Course Number: TOT15E
Course Title: Green Plumbing Design

Course Objectives:Upon completion of this course, you will have a better
Understanding of the following:

  1. In this seminar you will learn about new trends in plumbing design aimed at reducing potable water use. The toilet, being the largest water user on the plumbing system has undergone some major changes during the past 15 years.
We will examine the national standards of three countries and learn about the move to develop an independent performance standard by water utilities to help identify the better performing toilets.
The efficiency of new urinals, faucets and showers are also examined and the criteria used to achieve Water Efficiency credits in the LEED evaluation systems for green buildings will be discussed.

We will learn about the reasons for the code changes and what they really say. We’ll look at the standards that are set for the design of toilets by a voluntary committee in the U.S. and some standards that apply in Canada and Japan. The seminar discusses the water usage of urinals and its dependence on maintenance.
We will distinguish between residential and commercial use faucets, examine the code requirements for each and discuss performance issues related to functionality and user needs.
The LEED 2.1 Water Efficiency credits related to plumbing fittings and fixtures will be analyzed and some proposals made for an increase in these credits in future versions of LEED.
