streets and creating better opportunities for
pedestrian traffic is the focus of this course.
This course also discusses how walking paths
and pavement design can bring communities together
to create a more livable neighborhood and community
environment. Additionally, applications concerning
traffic calming and environmental benefits of
pavement design will be reviewed. All design
professionals including architects, engineers,
landscape architects, developers, and everyone
interested in living and working in healthier,
community-centric neighborhoods will benefit
from participation in this course. Through this
course, we strive to expand the scope of sustainability
from individual projects to include neighborhoods
and the connectivity that is vital to every community. |

Learning
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the design professional will be able to:
1. List the 5 components of sustainable streets.
2. Describe the 3 considerations for choosing pavements: Recyclability,
Carbon Footprint, Heat Island Effect.
3. Explain strategies for mitigating heat island effect.
4. Express how pavement fits into different green building rating systems
and environmental concerns including VOCs, Energy, LEED, and Greenroads.
5. Describe different traffic calming methodologies and explain the final
solution to meeting these goals.
6. Give examples on how walking path and pavement design can bring communities
together to create a move livable environment and a better quality neighborhood.
7. Illustrate NYC’s Sustainable Streets Plan and describe how this
is helping to create a better pedestrian and cyclist environment in an
urban setting. |
