Total Bathroom Design

"Universal Design", "Accessible Design", "Inclusive Design", "Sustainable Design", "Green Design", among others are labels for specialties. Labels isolate concepts into cells. Labeling what is good design practice sends a message that it is only for some. Total design is for the total of all people. The purpose of this course is to make the case that all design features that help a bathroom be friendly to all people and the environment are simply elements of good bathroom design.

  1. List attributes of a bathroom with total design
  2. Select the features of a bathroom that maximize an elderly or disabled person's ability to independently live with dignity
  3. Describe the advantages to the residents of a home that has implemented total design in their bathroom
  4. Explain why good bathroom design should encompass the needs of the total of all people
