When Backup Power Becomes the Load: Designing Generator Exhaust Systems for Hyperscale Data Centers

This one-hour continuing education course examines the design challenges of generator exhaust systems in hyperscale data center environments. As facilities grow from single-generator installations to large mission-critical campuses with dozens of parallel generators, exhaust system design becomes far more complex. The system needs to manage strict engine backpressure limits, long horizontal runs, directional changes, high exhaust temperatures, acidic condensate, thermal expansion, and code-compliant material selection. Participants will review how these conditions affect system reliability, building safety, and long-term performance. The course will examine backpressure dynamics, condensate management, joint design, pipe wall gauge, thermal expansion control, expansion joints, pressure relief valves, UL listing classifications, and the differences between factory-built prefabricated systems and traditional field-welded carbon steel. The goal is to help architects, engineers, and design professionals better understand how generator exhaust decisions affect mission-critical operations, code compliance, installation coordination, and occupant health, safety, and welfare.
